Our NYC Living Room

We honestly took a while to post this video in fear of negative commentary and being obsessive about removing clutter and down-sizing down to just the necessities. Coming from a living room that was about the size of our entire apartment, it's definitely be an adjustment. Living "tiny" in the city can be tough, but also very rewarding as you're lessening your footprint and only holding onto items that really matter and bring you happiness. Here are 3 of our most helpful tips with dealing with a small space:

  • Keep only what you need. This is easier said than done and we've proven that by still owning a storage unit in the city. Don't be like us. [haha] No really, get rid of everything. If you're having a tough time getting started, check out this read by Marie Kondo.
  • Get multi-purpose furniture. If you buy an ottoman, it should have an internal storage compartment. Sofas should serve as cuddle space and a space to shove excess shoes that you should've gotten rid of last year. Also note that wall space is storage. Hang multiple coat hangers and hooks to get items off of ground, creating more floor space.
  • Opt-out for small. Once you decide to live in the city, its time to accept that the vintage armoire you wasted your entire tax return on cannot move in with you. We had to sell (or stow away) 90% of our furniture due to the size of the pieces. In our opinion, it's actually better to start over and only purchase once you've moved into your new space!
Let us know what you think of our living room and how we've utilized the small space. Thanks and see you in the next one!
